Methods of Bible Study: Reading Someone Else’s Mail or Looking at NT Letters
In these four-session courses we will focus on the challenges of rightly interpreting the different types of literature in the Bible. Each type of literature demands a different set of interpretive “rules.” Consequently we interpret poetry (Psalms) differently than we do legal literature (Leviticus). In our first set of sessions we will focus on interpreting New Testament letters and will use Ephesians as our study text. You will be prepared to study through Ephesians paragraph by paragraph as Pastor Bill preaches through this great letter. You will also learn to follow the logic of Paul’s argument both in the book as a whole and through each paragraph. You will learn how to study significant words in the text and do research on the historical and cultural background to our New Testament letters. Finally, we will discuss the importance of the teaching of this letter to our lives today. You need to come prepared to work together in class as well as do a bit of homework!
What to bring:
You need to bring one of the more “direct correspondence” translations of the Bible such as the New American Standard (NASB), English Standard Bible (ESV), or New English Translation (NET). The NET Bible is available entirely on-line with study notes and so you would not need to purchase it.
A good study Bible is necessary. The NIV Study Bible is a good one but there are others as well.
Paper and pen.
Optional Resources:
Dictionary of Paul and His Letters (IVP Academic, 1993). $37.80
Ephesians in the Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament series, by Clinton Arnold (Zondervan 2010). $24.41
